How to apply for Medicaid in your state
For North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, and surrounding areas, start with the agency for your state of residence.
- Choose your state or D.C. in the official Medicaid.gov state directory and open its Medicaid agency.
- Follow that agency’s current application options—online, phone, or in person where offered.
- Complete the official application and provide the information and documents the agency requests.
- Respond to follow-up requests and check your application status with that agency.
- If approved, confirm home-care coverage with your plan and provider.
Rules, required documents, processing times, eligibility, and covered services vary by state. Only the state agency determines eligibility. VBOS Fast Flow does not determine eligibility or submit applications.

With appropriate permission, route the request through an approved referral channel. The provider independently reviews and accepts or declines it.

Handoff
Confirm provider acceptance, receipt of the handoff and who to contact next. Acceptance alone does not complete the handoff.
